A few days back, I told you about the havoc created by 3 hours of rain in the Tricity of Chandigarh. (Click Here to read again) All this clearly indicates that our big cities are not prepared for heavy rains and people face acute problems whenever it rains heavily in this these cities. Today's news suggests same for Indian commercial capital Mumbai where so far more than 100 mm rain took place. This rain has again put the whole city to halt by stopping all kinds of public transport.
Mumbai local is the life line of Mumbaikars because it contacts with to the various parts of the city quickly; however, today Mumbai local has totally stopped working thus making it very hard for people to reach their homes. To stop the situation from going out of hand, Mumbai government asked all private and government offices to close early so that people can reach their homes on time. Mumbai government has further asked everyone to stay in their homes.
Already all major rail tracks and roads are under water, thus making it very hard for people to reach their homes. The state government has further advised people to all call 100 in case of any emergency or help. A wrote article on this matter 10 years back, Rain disasters and Mumbai, but it looks that nobody learned any lesson. The Governments come and go but the situation remains the same or even become worse. Met department predicts that heavy rains may continue for next two to three days and this can make further worsen the situation.
I hope that nobody must have forgotten about the 26th July 2005 floods in Mumbai which put the whole city to halt and more than 400 people died due to drowning or other accidents. The urban planning is totally failing all major cities of the India and we need to work out some solution for the safety of people.
