Finally, we are getting films from Bollywood which are crossing all earlier barriers to bring actual realities in front of us. DEV D is also one such perfect film based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's famous Bengali novel Devdas. Unlike other films earlier made on same storyline, DEV D is very different in number of ways and it is only film which is more close to present generation Dev, Paro and Chandarmuhi (Chanda).
From the time, this novel was written by Sarat Chandra many things have changed in India. Today, we can easily find large numbers of people struggling with emotional problems including love. Story of DEV D also revolves around one such emotionally struggling rich boy from Punjab. First part of movie highlights delicate childhood bond between Dev and Paro becoming adulthood sexual attraction cum love. In the start of movie, Dev ask Paro to send her nude photograph to him through email, though, Sarat’s original Dev may never have put any such demand in front of Paro.
However, in present world it is very common and internet is full of many such leaked pictures. I am not advocating this move; however, I am only highlighting the boldness of this movie. There is also one more interesting fact in movie which highlights sexual advance by a woman which field is so far believed to be belonging to men only. Today’s millions of Dev are struggling between love and sex and they do not know where a border line exists between them.
We are slowly becoming an open society where sex before marriage is becoming a common affair like in west, though; we people are still not bold enough to accept this reality. Sexual exploitation of teenage girls is another issue which this film highlights very beautifully. Many times teenage mistake cost very dearly to number of teenage girls like what happens to Chanda in film. Though, some people may say that this is only a film, however, it is very near to reality. In Punjab, we can easily find many DEV, who spoil their lives in drinking, drugs and sex.
In present world, it has become even more difficult to provide proper emotional support and guidance to children. Overall, DEV D is a great film from Anurag Kashyap and both new comer Kalki Koechlin and Mahi Gil have given extra ordinary performances. Abhay Deyol has also given very good performance in this film, though some may say that he is only fighting, drinking and having sex with women. However, this is what he is supposed to do and he did it perfectly. DEV D is a exceptionally well film which force us to think.
