New Role for Bilawal Bhutto Zardari

Benazir Bhutto’s sudden death has pushed her 19 year old son Bilawal Zardari in to Politics. Bilawal was born on 21 September, 1988 just before his mother became Prime Minister of Pakistan for first time. Bilawal always have strong affections for his mother; therefore after the death of his mother, Bilawal has changed his name to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for giving tribute to his late mother. Bilawal has spent most of his life years outside Pakistan (mostly in Dubai) due to self imposed exile of his mother and other threats.

According to him “Democracy is the best revenge”, as his mother always believed. Bilawal responsibilities have suddenly increased as he was chosen as new chairmen of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on 30, Dec 2007. However, so far he will only be a symbolic chairmen and his father Asif Ali Zardari will lead the party till Bilawal joins the politics later actively.

According to close PPP sources, Benazir Bhutto always wanted Bilawal to head PPP after her; however nobody may have thought that this time will come so early. At present, Bilawal is back in Oxford University for completing his graduation in History. Most of political experts believe that Bilawal will be able to lead his party only after 5-6 years and therefore, there is no hope in present times that Bilawal will participate actively in politics.

With the death of Benazir Bhutto from hands of militants, threats for her family and especially for Bilawal have also increased. However, like the other members of his family, Bilawal is required to fight this threat and emerge as strong leader as per the hopes of people. At present, it is very difficult to predict that how people will accept this new leader in future but still, there are hopes that he can be a new and strong face in Pakistan politics soon.
