India started year 2008, with a fight against the molestation. On the second day of New Year, Indian TV channels were full of news related to molestation and total four molestation cases were reported from different parts of India. However, major focus remained on the molestation episode occurred in Mumbai where mob of around 60 people attacked two women of a NRI family and molested them. Some people grabbed these women and some torn their clothes, however, nobody came forward for their rescue. Mob also attacked and beat two men accompanying these women. Thankfully, this whole episode was captured on camera by two Hindustan Times, reporters. Mumbai police initially failed in registering complain of this family.
However, Indian media highlighted this issue and forced Mumbai police and government to take strong action against these culprits. So far, police has arrested 14 people and also searching for more people. This is a rare incidence when molestation victim will see some justice because mostly molesting women is not seen as crime by many men in India and 99% of molestation cases in India go unreported. Crime against women is not a new thing in India as in every 32 second one woman is raped, in every 25 second one woman is killed (including female foeticide) and in every 18 second one woman is molested in India.
This is for the first time and thanks to Indian media that a good lesson will be taught to these kinds of people. Molestation is one such crime against women in India which despite so many hue and cries does not get any serious punishment. In most of the cases, women do not register complain due to social shame attached and this thing further increase the confidence of such people. Second in many parts of India, police also do not take molestation cases seriously. Molestation is a big shame on the Indian society and we require more strong actions from people, media and police for providing a free and secure environment to women and girls of India.
