How to file e-return (Income tax return online) India? (Updated)

This is revised article to provide new and updated information for filling income tax return online. From many years filing income tax return has remained a very cumbersome activity for tax payers in India. First of all, people are required to fill detailed forms and second they are required to fight with the slow process of filing a return. To solve this problem, Income tax department has introduced e-filing of income tax return few years back. With the help of e-filing people can easily file income tax returns online in just 5 minutes 24 hours a day, as they say it “Any Time Any Where” e-filing. If people have digital signatures then they can submit their returns online without visiting any of income tax department. People who do not have digital signatures; they can also submit their returns online but they are required to submit TR V acknowledgement manually to central e-filing Bengaluru office in next fifteen days. Therefore with the help of e-filing, people can enjoy convenience of filling their returns in hassle free manner. Below, people can go through step by step guide on how to file e-return.


E-return filing tutorial-

Step 1- First step is to visit Incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in, a website created by Income tax department to file e-return.

Step 2- On this page, people can find download option on the left side bar of page. Here people are required to first select year of return filing and then corresponding category e.g. individual, firms, companies etc.

Step 3- Download the corresponding ITR form and return preparation software applicable to you (this download is available for free of cost).

Step 4- Fill ITR form offline with the help of return preparation software.

Step 5- After completing filling of this form, convert this form into XML file with the help of same return preparation software and finally, save it on your computer.

Step 6- Now again visit- https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and login to website if you already have login information or otherwise click register to generate login details.

Step 7- After signing into your home page with the help of login information, click on upload return button (available on left side of page).

Step 8- Here upload your XML file stored in your computer and add digital signature if you have one or otherwise only upload XML file. If only XML file is uploaded without digital signature then IRT-V verification cum acknowledgement form will be available to download which tax payers are required to submit to central e-filing office Bangaluru within 15 days.

Additional instructions for submitting IRT-V form issued by Income Tax Department-

1. Please use Ink Jet /Laser printer to print the ITR-V Form.
2. The ITR-V Form should be printed only in black ink.
3. Do not use any other ink option to print ITR V.
4. Use of Dot Matrix printer should be avoided.
5. Ensure that print out is clear and not light print/faded copy.
6. Please do not print any water marks on ITR-V. The only permissible watermark is that of "Income tax Department" which is printed automatically on each ITR-V.
7. The document that is mailed to CPC should be signed in original.
8. Photocopy of signatures will not be accepted.
9. The signatures or any handwritten text should not be written on Bar code.
10. Bar code and numbers below barcode should be clearly visible.
11. Only A4 size white paper should be used.
12. Avoid typing anything at the back of the paper.
13. Perforated paper or any other size paper should be avoided.
14. Do not use stapler on ITR V acknowledgement.
15. In case you are submitting original and revised returns, do not print them back to back. Use two separate papers for printing ITR-Vs separately.
16. Please do not submit any annexures, covering letter, pre stamped envelopes etc. along with ITR-V.
17. The ITR-V form is required to be sent to Post Bag No.1, Electronic City Post Office, Bengaluru, Karnataka-560100, by ordinary post.
18. ITR-Vs that do not conform to the above specifications may get rejected or acknowledgement of receipt may get delayed.


Step 9- If you have not added digital signature to your e-return and submitted it without a digital signature then You should send ITR-V form to central Bangaluru office for verification (follow all details available above for correct submission of IRT-V form.

Step 10- Only applicable for people who followed step 9 (without digital signature). Wait for verification email from central e-filing office Bangaluru and store or print it for future use. This completes e-filing of tax return. If you do not receive confirmation mail then you should connect back e-filing office Bangaluru.
